Bank Jugging

What It Is and How to Stay Vigilant

Bank Jugging is when a suspect or suspects observe bank customers entering and exiting the branch, using the drive-thru or accessing the ATM/ITM. The suspect(s) then follow the customers they believe are in possession of large amounts of cash and look for an opportunity to burglarize their vehicles or rob them directly.

Most often the crime occurs at the destination the victim stops at after leaving the bank. Police say this type of crime usually happens when the victim’s cash is visible or is openly carried using a bank bag, envelope, or coin box.

Helpful tips to share with customers to stay safe and prevent them from becoming a victim of bank jugging...

  • Watch for anyone who is suspiciously hanging around in the lobby or parking lot and does not appear to be occupied.
  • Be vigilant of your surroundings when arriving and departing. If you observe suspicious vehicles parked in or around the parking lot, don’t leave your car or the building.
  • Try not to be distracted. Avoid being on your phone, wearing earbuds, etc.
  • Don't openly carry bank bags, envelopes or coin boxes.
  • Lock your car doors when you get into your vehicle.
  • Don't leave a bank bag (hidden or not) in your car unattended.
  • Watch for people following you.
  • If you believe you are being targeted/followed, call 911 or drive to the nearest police station or fire/EMS station.
  • And as always, trust your gut and say something to someone if you feel uneasy.

Bank Jugging is becoming increasingly prevalent in Texas. It is easy to get in a rush and be distracted, but if you stay aware of your surroundings and report anything suspicious you can avoid getting “Jugged.”
